Carnac is generally reckoned to be the most important prehistoric site in Europe, and it's almost impossible to avoid comparisons with Stonehenge, even though Carnac has no horizontal lintel stones. The firsts thing that strikes you when you clap eyes on the mégaliths of Carnac is the sheer scale of the site and the number of standing stones; that, and how orderly they all are. The second thing is how little is actually known about them.
